FIND OUT HOW SUPERHERO PLUMBERS BATTLE UNCLEAN WATER IN YOUR HOME

The contaminants in your home drinking water can have a significant potential impact on your health and the health of your family. Fortunately, local plumbers can help to keep you safe and protect your home over the coming years.

In this latest post, our Mississauga and Oakville, ON experts explore more on the damage that home water contamination can cause and how local plumbers can work to protect your home.

HOW PLUMBERS CAN SAVE YOUR FAMILY

Unclean water is linked with many dangerous bacteria and health issues. Your local plumbers can work with you to mitigate the impact of unclean water and ensure that you’re only drinking fresh water from your home taps.

They commit to this process by offering expertise in water filtration. They can install the latest water filtration products such as UV filters and carbon filtration solutions to stop contaminants from entering your home water supply.

The company can also offer testing products to ensure you know which contaminants are present in your supply and how to remove them.

THE HEALTH ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH DIRTY WATER

Drinking unclean water can have a number of health effects on the body depending on the type of bacteria ingested.

For example, if you accidentally drink a cup of water contaminated with e coli you could find that you develop stomach pains and damage your intestinal health in the long-term.

Young children and the elderly are more susceptible to these health issues, and so it’s imperative you protect them by working with local plumbers to prevent home water contamination. Your plumbing team can advise you on the full range of steps you can take to mitigate contamination issues.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PRESERVE WATER ACCESS

Your home water system can be protected by local plumbing teams, and there are steps you can take to ensure your local community has continued access to clean water.

For example, you might consider installing low-flow systems on your shower and toilet. These low-flow units limit the amount of water you use on a regular basis and help prevent over-consumption.

You might also limit the number of times you use your home dishwasher, keeping your water-use restricted on a weekly basis. Trust your local plumbers to keep you safe and to continually test your home water for common bacteria. Call the experts today to begin the testing process.

HISTORY OF INDOOR PLUMBING FACTS YOU CAN USE

Plumbing is a lot more than the PVC or copper pipes you see underneath sinks or behind walls. Unknown to many, plumbing did not start with the invention of a flushing toilet.

The ancient people constructed drainage and sewer lines that were used to supply water and dispose of sewer water. Here are some historical indoor plumbing facts that you can use.

PREHISTORY OF INDOOR PLUMBING

In Crete, the Minoans developed a plumbing system that involved underground clay pipes. This happened from 3000 BC. The Minoan civilization is also credited for the first flushing toilets that were referred to as water closets.

Scientists discovered four drainage systems leading to a mass sewer system that was made of stone. They also had a terracotta piping system underneath the floor of the palace that delivered water to the faucets and fountains.

THE EGYPTIAN AND ROMAN PLUMBING ADVANCES

Ancient Egyptians created one of the oldest plumbing systems. Their construction was based on the rise and fall of the Nile. Egyptians used delicate pipe systems made from clay to move water from the Nile to their farms.

They also used the pipes to supply homes with water. After a while, they upgraded to copper pipes. Archeologists discovered burial chambers to the Pharaohs that had draining tubs and other amenities meant for the afterlife.

The Roman Empire is famous for its contribution to modern plumbing. Scientists refer to Romans as engineers, and this is for a good reason.

In the sixth century, Romans constructed Cloaca Maxima, a sewer system that featured an open channel. This sewer system exists up to date although it’s now closed and vaulted. Also, the Romans are known for their aqueducts that relied on gravity to transport water from the mountains to people’s home, public wells, and fountains.

Wastewater was then drained into the main sewer line. The regular supply of running water helped to remove any debris or obstacles that were stuck in the drain.

NEW PLUMBING TECHNOLOGY

-LESS INVASIVE PIPE REPAIRS

Previously, if a leak was found behind walls or under a foundation slab, the plumber would have to tear out the old pipes and install new ones.

However, with the help of new technology, the plumber can use a multi-step process to clean the interior of the pipes and later apply an epoxy resin coat to seal and stop leaks.

-TOUCHLESS TOILETS

Gone are the days when you had to flush your toilet. Thanks to smart technology you can now wave your hand to signal the toilet to flush or for the toilet seat to go down.

Modern toilets are fitted with motion sensors, and some do not even need to be washed as they are self-cleaning. You can also find rimless toilets that do not require any toilet paper.

The ancient plumbing systems and methods have helped shape modern-day plumbing systems in Oakville and Mississauga, ON. You can now have a reason to be thankful for that showerhead or faucet that conveniently supplies you with water for your everyday use.At Gold Medal Plumbing and Drain, we want to ensure your plumbing works properly all year round. Whether you need a routine maintenance service or have a plumbing emergency, our trusted plumbers are ready to help! Contact us today to schedule an appointment.

TIPS FOR A FUN SUMMER FOR THE WATER CONSCIOUS

Another Canadian summer has arrived, and for people of the Golden Horseshoe, it has been an unusual time. A higher than normal amount of rain has been falling in the area, but that hasn’t stopped the occasional heat wave from causing some weather alerts.

The arrival of summer usually means an increase in the water bill for a number of reasons. Households with kids may use more water because of sprinkler and other hose-related fun. But washing cars and keeping gardens moist also takes its toll. We have a few tips ready to help people enjoy their water this summer without necessarily paying more for it.

GET A RAIN BARREL INSTALLED

This is especially true this year, with the unusually high amounts of rain. People who have gardens and lawns need to periodically water them during these hot summer months to keep the vegetation healthy, but that can mean using up a lot of water.

If you get a rain barrel put on your property, that addition can save you liters of water usage. It’s not advised you use it for drinking or cooking, but putting it on your flowers, trees, plants, and grass is perfect and saves you the expense of pumping water from the city supply. If your home uses a portable dehumidifier for the basement or another area, that water can also be put to use!

CREATE AN UNDERSEA SPACE FOR TOYS

This is a great water-based, outdoor activity for kids with toys. All you need is a bin of water, some rocks to throw in, and a few additional toys or props like boats, action figures, monsters or other toys that may be in the house. Bring it all out into the yard and create a new, splash-approved play space.

Now, your kids and their friends have a “tub” with a sea environment that they can freely splash around with all they want. Sea adventures with action figures and other toys are always a favorite for a child’s imagination, but there’s no reason to limit this type of play to just the bathtub. Bring it out into the yard, and let them enjoy themselves without breaking out the hose and sprinklers for water-based activity.

THE BACKYARD BATH

If you’ve got very young children or even older kids that are game for it, try saving some money and having fun by undertaking a backyard bathing experience. A change of venue for toddlers and other wee ones with all the splashing and fun can make a big difference.

If you’ve got any somewhat older children, they can participate too if they like. Taking this time to clean children outside helps you to save on water since there won’t be a need for further baths or showers that day, they’ve already cleaned themselves up.

WATER LEAK DETECTION TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS

Like most people, you probably love the water: the lake nearby, the swimming pool in the backyard, and even the running water in your house.

But when water goes where it’s not supposed to, such as what happens when there’s a leak in your plumbing system, it can cause major damage and require expensive repairs to remedy.

Luckily, you can prevent most leaks, lots of damage, and painful headaches with some expert leak detection and prevention tips, and that’s why we’re going to dedicate today’s discussion to these very tips.

KNOW HOW TO FIND LEAKS WHEN THEY OCCUR

When you discover a leak in your house, you’ll have to go through a whole-home inspection to find it.

Start with the easy things, like faucets, visible pipes in the basement and under the sinks, the toilets, showerheads, fixtures, and appliances.

If your initial search didn’t yield any results, the next step is to inspect all the walls, ceilings, and floors for water, dampness, soft areas, mold, mildew, discoloration, blistering, or warping.

Any of these could indicate that there’s a leak in one of the pipes that’s buried between or under the walls and floors.

Finally, the last step is to do a walk-around of your yard, including your driveway and garage floor.

Look for puddles, dark spots, spongy areas, and other signs that there’s been water sitting or running regularly.

DO WHAT YOU CAN TO PREVENT LEAKS

Preventing leaks with habits: Leaks often spring up because of wear, tear, and corrosion of different parts, but there are also habits you can adopt that will help prevent them too.

For one, avoid using corrosive cleaners to clean your drains.

Similarly, keep your drains maintained and unclogged, and make sure everybody in the house knows what can and can’t get flushed down the drains and toilets.

Also, keep an eye on trees that might have roots that could grow into the sewer and water lines. Finally, keep the water pressure at the right level (between 45 and 55 psi).

Avoiding leaks with preventative maintenance: Good habits aren’t the only thing that can prevent leaks, and proper maintenance will also contribute to a leak-free house.

For starters, perform regular inspections to make sure that your taps, fixtures, and appliances are working properly, and replace worn hoses and parts immediately to stop leaks from starting.

You should also have your water heater, septic, and sump systems maintained by a professional.

LEARN THE BENEFITS OF PREVENTING LEAKS

The reasons to stay on top of leaks in your house are almost endless, so today we’ll briefly go over a few of the most important ones.

By taking preventative maintenance steps, you’ll avoid the problems that leaks can cause, which include:

  • Rust, rot, and corrosion
  • Mold and mildew
  • Expensive repairs
  • Expensive water bills
  • Warping, bubbling, and blistering
  • Burst pipes and major floods

When you take steps to prevent and fix leaks now, you’ll thank yourself down the road for the money you save.

The planet will thank you for the water you save, and your house will thank you for keeping it in such great shape

QUICK TIPS FOR KITCHEN & BATHROOM RENOVATIONS

Kitchen and bathroom renovations can help to improve the value of your home and ensure your home remains in peak condition for the long-term.

But one of the leading challenges for many homeowners is completing the renovation process affordably and in a quick timeframe.

At Gold Medal Plumbing and Drain, we understand that home renovations can be a daunting task, which is why we’ve created this blog to help you started. If you have plumbing questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to our skilled team.

CHOOSE RENOVATION EXPERTS EARLY

As the year moves on and we get closer to the summer, the leading renovation teams become busier.

This can make it more difficult to book construction work in and around your home.

And so, it’s important to take on the process as early as possible in the late spring/early summer.

Make sure you review the local companies and get quotes from a number of experienced professionals to ensure you have the ideal platform to an effective renovation process.

CREATE THE IDEAL SPACE

An area that homeowners have control over in terms of making their renovation work a success is the working environment for the renovation team.

Make sure that you create the ideal space in which to work for all renovation team members. For example, you should ensure all personal belongings are removed from the bathroom and kitchen space.

And introduce yourself to the team leader at the beginning of the project so that they can come to you if they have any questions or concerns along the way.

This will help the project to move forward seamlessly and will ensure you reduce any confusion in your communications with the renovation team.

CONSIDER HIGH-EFFICIENCY OPTIONS

One of the most common mistakes that homeowners make during the renovation process is they don’t consider their costs well in the future.

They think only of the immediate value of the renovation work.

It’s important that additions to the bathroom and kitchen hold their value in the long-term.

And that’s why you should carefully consider additions that increase your home energy efficiency, during your home update.

For example, you might consider adding high-efficiency dishwashers and low flow toilets to the home during the renovation.

This will help you to save thousands on energy use in the coming years.
