March 22 is a very important day every year. It is World Water Day, which was established by the United Nations over two decades ago to draw attention to the global water crisis.

Did you know that close to 800 million people worldwide don’t have access to life-sustaining freshwater? Did you know that many people have to spend hours every day traveling just to collect water for their families and villages?

World Water Day is all about learning about water scarcity and what you can do to help. Homeowners have a special role to play in water conservation. Here is what you need to know:

Did you know that leaky plumbing wastes enormous amounts of water every year? As a homeowner being vigilant about leaks can not only save lots of water, you can save lots of money as well.

Be on the lookout for signs that you have leaks: unexplained increases in your water bills, mold and mildew growth appear, pooling water, damp spots or water meter readings that don’t make sense when the water is turned off.

Conservation of water starts with being mindful of how you use it.

Take a shower instead of a bath; while you are waiting for the shower to heat up, collect that water in a bucket and then use it to flush the toilet. Flushing the toilet takes a huge amount of water, so if you can assist with flushing, you’re much further ahead. Similarly, don’t use the toilet like a garbage can for small items, like Kleenex or cigarette butts.

In your kitchen, run the tap as little as possible. Fill your sink to wash fruits and veggies. When you are cooking, consider steaming items in a little water rather than boiling them. Make sure that you use the right sized pot for what you are cooking too.

Outside, plant more shrubs so that you’ve got less lawn to water. In the summer, consider letting the kids run through the sprinkler- but only on areas that need watering. Follow watering restrictions and make sure that your sprinklers are aimed at the grass only- not on the driveway or gutters.

As the world population increases, so will our need for water. It is said that most of the water use in the world is for agriculture as opposed to domestic use, so as our need for food increases, the need for water will grow exponentially. We have to explore ways to conserve and recycle the supply that we have.

Water scarcity and poor sanitation create a breeding ground for waterborne illnesses; statistics show that half of the world’s hospital beds are filled with people suffering from a water-related illness, many of which end up being lethal. The issue is that many of these diseases are preventable if a suitable water supply is provided. The time to act is now.
