WHY THE MESSY SIDE OF PLUMBING DOESN’T BOTHER US ANYMORE

It’s a question often asked and a judgment often passed: How could plumbers want to spend all day dealing with clogged toilets?

Yes, it’s true. There is a very obvious “number two” element to the job that we don’t particularly relish, but plumbing doesn’t start and end with unclogging toilets. In fact, it’s only a small portion of the job description. So why does the world fixate on this? Because we certainly don’t.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PLUMBING

Like most plumbers, we believe that there is unseen respectability and importance to our type of work that often goes unnoticed in the public eye. Understandably, our customers fixate on the one unpleasant part of the job, which minimizes all of the other important components. But in fact, every living human being on this planet owes a huge debt of gratitude to modern plumbing; before municipal sewage and waste management (all bastions of plumbing), “dealing” with black water meant tossing the contents of a bucket over the window, shouting “gardyloo” to passersby below, and waiting for the wastewater to seep into the ground, which would then get carried away by hoof and foot, or washed through the streets by heavy rain.

It’s not difficult to imagine the smell and disease that arose from these unsavoury practices. History has shown us over and over again what the consequences are of inefficient plumbing and sanitation.

Why do we owe our lives today to modern plumbing? Because our ancestors finally realized that in order for our species to survive, we need to abide by a basic principle of hygiene and cleanliness: Clean water comes in and dirty water goes out, and neither should interfere with the other. Plumbing puts that principle into practice.

PLUMBING IN THE EYES OF THE PUBLIC

There is a direct correlation between the advancements in plumbing and the rising life expectancy. With all these accomplishments, however, the plumbing industry continues to be synonymous with unsavoury practices. Are not surgeons, nurses, veterinarians, and even farmers exposed to the same level of human or animal putrefaction? And yet these noble professions do not face public scrutiny because a share of their work is dedicated to the removal of black water.

WHY BLACK WATER DOESN’T BOTHER US

To put it plainly, we’re professionals! We’re also tacticians, puzzle-solvers, life-savers, explorers, and fixers. Like many other jobs, we have to get our hands dirty occasionally. That doesn’t diminish the fact that we can trace our professional lineage all the way back to Ancient Rome. Since then, our profession has been dedicated to keeping our community safe, clean, and healthy.

WHAT TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR BATHROOM REMODEL

Are you looking to remodel your bathroom? That’s a wise choice if you’re seeking to improve your property value. Studies have shown that the most important aspects in a home are the kitchen and bathroom. When these spaces are up to date, they indicate that your home is well maintained and that you care about the aesthetics and cleanliness of your property.

Here are the top things to consider when preparing for your bathroom remodel:

LIGHTING

The quality of lighting in a bathroom makes a significant difference in the overall perceptions of the space. Good lighting makes it easier to get ready in the morning and instantly brightens the room. Of course, natural lighting is the most ideal for a bathroom. This could mean a window or skylights located above. That being said, it’s not always possible to install a window or skylight, as there are various structural requirements that make it difficult. In this event, consider installing bright recessed lighting throughout the bathroom in addition to extra lighting near the sink area.

STORAGE SPACE

Although you may love the minimalist appeal of a sleek and modern sink in the showroom, it’s important to take into account what it will look like in your space. There isn’t much point to installing a modern sink and vanity only to have it cluttered with the products you use on a daily basis. Take this into account as you choose the elements you install in your new bathroom. One way to overcome this is by installing a mirrored medicine cabinet.

SHOWER OR TUB?

This can be a hard decision to make. Ideally, you would be able to have both, but often times there just isn’t the space. To determine the best option for you, ask yourself: how many times do you take a bath per year? A lot of people take baths less often because they find them more time-consuming. That being said, if you take baths often it might be a worthwhile investment. If you’re having trouble deciding, you can always opt for a bath and shower combination for the best of both worlds.

PLUMBING

Renovating your bathroom is the ideal time to make adjustments to your plumbing, as well. This will be necessary if you choose to move around the location of your shower, sink, or toilet. Alternatively, you can opt to upgrade your pipes. Bathroom pipes with a larger diameter are less likely to experience issues with clogs from hair and debris in addition to providing higher water pressure.

5 PIPES TO RECOGNIZE IN DIY PLUMBING

Homeowners today still enjoy getting their hands dirty with DIY projects, and others may not have any choice but to handle the project themselves. A plumbing system keeps a home healthy, which is why it’s important to know what materials and practices you can and cannot use. Plumbing and building codes also change over time. The experts at Gold Medal Plumbing have provided a list of the main pipes you will encounter while rooting around in your home’s inner workings:

#1: PEX

PEX stands for cross-linked polyethylene. It is a flexible piping so it can bend at ninety degrees and allows homeowners to colour-code their system’s hot- and cold-water lines. It’s only used for water supply lines. DIYers love PEX because it’s easy to use when joining it to other pipes or cutting it to fit into their system. Many homeowners compare PEX to copper so they can have the best quality plumbing system.

#2: RIGID COPPER

Rigid copper is used for the water supply and, despite its name, it can easily be cut with a hacksaw or a special tool for cutting copper. It’s a pipe that more experienced DIYers are comfortable handling, particularly when they need to solder two pipes together to make a connection. It’s recommended to buy extra copper piping to practice on. Copper piping is better than PVC because it has fewer health risks.

#3: FLEXIBLE COPPER

Flexible or soft copper is ideal for short runs, primarily to water heaters and refrigerators. It’s commonly used for repairs because it can bend around obstacles as well as corners. It cannot withstand extreme temperatures, which limits it to interior use. Homeowners will find it comes in several sizes, but they will usually encounter ½ inch, ¼ inch, and 3/8 inch for kitchen and bathroom supply lines as well as taps.

#4: PVC

Also known as polyvinyl chloride, PVC pipes are white and used for drain and vent lines because they’re resistant to corrosion. Many homeowners are happy to use PVC for their irrigation system rather than galvanized steel because it’s lighter and easier to use. In general, it is a preferred DIY material because of its low cost and its strength.

#5: ABS

ABS, or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, is similar to PVC, except the pipes are black. ABS is considered to be an older version of PVC as it was used for drain and vent lines. We recommend replacing it with PVC because ABS no longer adheres to plumbing codes.

Gold Medal Plumbing has licensed plumbers to help you with your DIY work or provide advice on the best materials and practices. TOP WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

Are you looking to reduce your water consumption? By reducing the amount of water your household uses on a daily basis, you protect both the environment and your wallet. Although water consumption per person has decreased over the years, Canadians are still using an average of 329 litres of water per person every day.

Here are the top ways to conserve water in your home according to the expert Brampton plumbers at Gold Medal Plumbing and Drain:

BE WISE BEFORE TURNING ON APPLIANCES

Modern conveniences—such as the dishwasher and washing machine—have made our lives much easier, but can lead to excess water consumption if not used appropriately. Only turn on your dishwasher or washing machine when you have a full load because the same amount of water is used regardless of the contents inside. By planning and managing your loads, you will maximize the number of clean items, relative to the water used.

If you’re in dire need of clean dishes or laundry, check if your washing machine and dishwasher have a rapid clean setting. These settings are less water-intensive, as they are specifically designed for small loads of clothing or dishes.

INVEST IN HIGH-EFFICIENCY APPLIANCES AND FIXTURES

The next time you need to replace your toilet or showerhead, opt for an eco-friendlier model. Low-flush toilets are installed in most newly constructed homes and reduce the amount of water used by nearly half. Similarly, low-flow showerheads decrease water consumption by up to 40%. With both of these options, you’ll barely notice the difference compared to your traditional toilet or showerhead. You might even get a rebate for installing them!

WATER YOUR PLANTS STRATEGICALLY

A lush garden boosts your curb appeal and creates an inviting space for your friends and family to gather. That being said, failing to water your garden strategically results in a lot of wasted water. Take advantage of natural, free water by installing a rain barrel. Many varieties are available, but a basic model is usually obtainable at your local home improvement store. This way, you’ll have plenty of water stored up for the next time your garden is dry and in need of hydration.

In the hot summer months, consider watering your garden in the morning, or later at night when the sun isn’t at its strongest. By doing so, you prevent water evaporation due to the sun and ensure that your plants and shrubs are actually getting the water they need.

CHECK YOUR WATER BILL

Leaks are one of the leading causes of excessive water consumption. They can occur virtually anywhere around your home or property where plumbing is present. Sometimes, they’re due to corrosion or wear and tear, while other times they’re indicative of a larger problem. If the leak is severe enough, you will receive an accompanying notice with your water bill informing you that there is a suspected leak due to an uncharacteristically high consumption. Having a plumber check your home for leaks ensures that you aren’t using more water than you need.

Gold Medal Plumbing and Drain is dedicated to providing you with 24/7 plumbing services in Brampton. We have the expertise and experience required to find the proper solution for your plumbing issues. Get a free estimate today by calling (416) 800-6264!

THE TOP 4 FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A PLUMBING PIPE

Making decisions about plumbing for your property can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t have any previous plumbing experience. Your plumbing material choice is important, as it provides you with one of our most precious resources: water. By gaining a better understanding of the factors you should take into account when choosing your plumbing pipe material, you will be able to make a more educated decision.

From your trusted Mississauga plumbers at Gold Medal Plumbing and Drain, here are the top factors to consider when making your plumbing material choice:

WATER TYPE

Depending on where you live, the water going through your pipes may be corrosive. Corrosive water refers to water that dissolves materials it comes into contact with. Corrosive water is problematic in your home because the last thing you want is your pipes degrading only a few years after they’ve been installed. Although the water itself isn’t harmful, when it corrodes copper and metal pipes, it also dissolves copper and lead into the water supply, which does pose health concerns. A water test conducted by a professional determines the level of acidity in your water source.

PLUMBING USE

The amount of water pressure you require is another important determinant in finding the correct plumbing pipe for your property. Chances are, if you are looking for a plumbing solution in a commercial space, you are seeking high water pressure. To maintain high water pressure, a pipe will need to be wide and durable enough to sustain significant force. Plastic pipes are usually the best option in this case, as they are specifically designed for this use.

If you are looking to reduce operating costs, you should also consider the smoothness of pipes. A smooth inside improves water flow, reducing the amount of resistance, and therefore water required. Brass piping is known to be the most smooth because it doesn’t rust in the interior.

SOIL CHARACTERISTICS

The composition of the soil surrounding your pipes has significant effects on their durability. Soil with excess rocks, moisture, and abrasive materials will eventually degrade your pipes. It’s also important to look at the chemical composition of the soil. Sometimes, soil with excess minerals can create a reaction when it comes into contact with certain pipe materials.

EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT

Sun has similar effects on pipes as it does to our skin. Ultraviolet (UV) rays deteriorate the surface quality of plastic pipes over time, making them more vulnerable to issues and decreasing their lifespan. Excess exposure to sunlight can also cause problems related to changes in temperature. PVC pipes aren’t used to carry hot water, so it’s not a good idea to have them installed in areas that naturally reach high temperatures. To combat this, many plumbers will use insulating materials to prevent temperature fluctuations affecting pipe quality.
