TOP WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

Are you looking to reduce your water consumption? By reducing the amount of water your household uses on a daily basis, you protect both the environment and your wallet. Although water consumption per person has decreased over the years, Canadians are still using an average of 329 litres of water per person every day.

Here are the top ways to conserve water in your home according to the expert Brampton plumbers at Gold Medal Plumbing and Drain:

BE WISE BEFORE TURNING ON APPLIANCES

Modern conveniences—such as the dishwasher and washing machine—have made our lives much easier, but can lead to excess water consumption if not used appropriately. Only turn on your dishwasher or washing machine when you have a full load because the same amount of water is used regardless of the contents inside. By planning and managing your loads, you will maximize the number of clean items, relative to the water used.

If you’re in dire need of clean dishes or laundry, check if your washing machine and dishwasher have a rapid clean setting. These settings are less water-intensive, as they are specifically designed for small loads of clothing or dishes.

INVEST IN HIGH-EFFICIENCY APPLIANCES AND FIXTURES

The next time you need to replace your toilet or showerhead, opt for an eco-friendlier model. Low-flush toilets are installed in most newly constructed homes and reduce the amount of water used by nearly half. Similarly, low-flow showerheads decrease water consumption by up to 40%. With both of these options, you’ll barely notice the difference compared to your traditional toilet or showerhead. You might even get a rebate for installing them!

WATER YOUR PLANTS STRATEGICALLY

A lush garden boosts your curb appeal and creates an inviting space for your friends and family to gather. That being said, failing to water your garden strategically results in a lot of wasted water. Take advantage of natural, free water by installing a rain barrel. Many varieties are available, but a basic model is usually obtainable at your local home improvement store. This way, you’ll have plenty of water stored up for the next time your garden is dry and in need of hydration.

In the hot summer months, consider watering your garden in the morning, or later at night when the sun isn’t at its strongest. By doing so, you prevent water evaporation due to the sun and ensure that your plants and shrubs are actually getting the water they need.

CHECK YOUR WATER BILL

Leaks are one of the leading causes of excessive water consumption. They can occur virtually anywhere around your home or property where plumbing is present. Sometimes, they’re due to corrosion or wear and tear, while other times they’re indicative of a larger problem. If the leak is severe enough, you will receive an accompanying notice with your water bill informing you that there is a suspected leak due to an uncharacteristically high consumption. Having a plumber check your home for leaks ensures that you aren’t using more water than you need.

TIPS FOR A FUN SUMMER FOR THE WATER CONSCIOUS

Another Canadian summer has arrived, and for people of the Golden Horseshoe, it has been an unusual time. A higher than normal amount of rain has been falling in the area, but that hasn’t stopped the occasional heat wave from causing some weather alerts.

The arrival of summer usually means an increase in the water bill for a number of reasons. Households with kids may use more water because of sprinkler and other hose-related fun. But washing cars and keeping gardens moist also takes its toll. We have a few tips ready to help people enjoy their water this summer without necessarily paying more for it.

GET A RAIN BARREL INSTALLED

This is especially true this year, with the unusually high amounts of rain. People who have gardens and lawns need to periodically water them during these hot summer months to keep the vegetation healthy, but that can mean using up a lot of water.

If you get a rain barrel put on your property, that addition can save you liters of water usage. It’s not advised you use it for drinking or cooking, but putting it on your flowers, trees, plants, and grass is perfect and saves you the expense of pumping water from the city supply. If your home uses a portable dehumidifier for the basement or another area, that water can also be put to use!

CREATE AN UNDERSEA SPACE FOR TOYS

This is a great water-based, outdoor activity for kids with toys. All you need is a bin of water, some rocks to throw in, and a few additional toys or props like boats, action figures, monsters or other toys that may be in the house. Bring it all out into the yard and create a new, splash-approved play space.

Now, your kids and their friends have a “tub” with a sea environment that they can freely splash around with all they want. Sea adventures with action figures and other toys are always a favorite for a child’s imagination, but there’s no reason to limit this type of play to just the bathtub. Bring it out into the yard, and let them enjoy themselves without breaking out the hose and sprinklers for water-based activity.

THE BACKYARD BATH

If you’ve got very young children or even older kids that are game for it, try saving some money and having fun by undertaking a backyard bathing experience. A change of venue for toddlers and other wee ones with all the splashing and fun can make a big difference.

If you’ve got any somewhat older children, they can participate too if they like. Taking this time to clean children outside helps you to save on water since there won’t be a need for further baths or showers that day, they’ve already cleaned themselves up.

GO GREEN: A HOUSEHOLD GUIDE FOR EARTH DAY

Did you know that as a homeowner, your choices when it comes to energy and water use can really impact the environment? This is especially true when it comes to your plumbing. It’s all about being aware of your water use and knowing what your options are.

Here is what you need to know:

APRIL 22 IS EARTH DAY

While being environmentally friendly is a task that should take place every day of the year, there is a special focus on Earth Day, which happens on April 22. Earth Day has been around for several decades, having been first celebrated back in 1970. It is now celebrated worldwide by 193 different countries.

It is a day of global observance to draw attention to the environment and the dangers of global warming. It is also a day to explore and discuss actions that can be taken to help reduce climate change.

TANKLESS WATER HEATERS

Want to reduce your energy bills and give the environment a boost at the same time? Consider installing a tankless water heater.

Unlike traditional water heaters, tankless heaters work “on demand,” heating water when you need it only.

It is a far more energy efficient way to heat water. And a bonus you’ll save on your energy bills too!

ECO-FRIENDLY PLUMBING FIXTURES

Do you have low flow toilets or showerheads? You should! These eco-friendly fixtures will reduce your water waste and help you to conserve water. Energy efficient faucets will also help regulate water flow.

WATER FILTRATION SYSTEMS INSTEAD

Avoid buying bottled water. Not only is it a super expensive way to consume water, but it is also one of the least environmentally friendly choices that you can make. Invest in a water filtration system instead.

You can have one installed easily right on your faucet, which will remove the impurities from your water. The result is crisp, clean tasting water that is good for the environment too.

REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

In addition to paying attention to your plumbing, there are other things that you can do to reduce your carbon footprint as a homeowner.

Check out your windows and doors to make sure that they are well sealed. Always choose EnergyStar rated appliances, which are the energy efficient choice.

Turn your thermostat down in the winter and a little higher in the winter to reduce your energy use and your carbon footprint.

Your steps to conserve energy and water use in your home will go a long way in reducing your carbon footprint.

WORLD WATER DAY TAKES PLACE ON MARCH 22

March 22 is a very important day every year. It is World Water Day, which was established by the United Nations over two decades ago to draw attention to the global water crisis.

Did you know that close to 800 million people worldwide don’t have access to life-sustaining freshwater? Did you know that many people have to spend hours every day traveling just to collect water for their families and villages?

World Water Day is all about learning about water scarcity and what you can do to help. Homeowners have a special role to play in water conservation. Here is what you need to know:

WHY YOUR PLUMBING MATTERS

Did you know that leaky plumbing wastes enormous amounts of water every year? As a homeowner being vigilant about leaks can not only save lots of water, you can save lots of money as well.

Be on the lookout for signs that you have leaks: unexplained increases in your water bills, mold and mildew growth appear, pooling water, damp spots or water meter readings that don’t make sense when the water is turned off.

HOW YOU CAN CONSERVE WATER

Conservation of water starts with being mindful of how you use it.

Take a shower instead of a bath; while you are waiting for the shower to heat up, collect that water in a bucket and then use it to flush the toilet. Flushing the toilet takes a huge amount of water, so if you can assist with flushing, you’re much further ahead. Similarly, don’t use the toilet like a garbage can for small items, like Kleenex or cigarette butts.

In your kitchen, run the tap as little as possible. Fill your sink to wash fruits and veggies. When you are cooking, consider steaming items in a little water rather than boiling them. Make sure that you use the right sized pot for what you are cooking too.

Outside, plant more shrubs so that you’ve got less lawn to water. In the summer, consider letting the kids run through the sprinkler- but only on areas that need watering. Follow watering restrictions and make sure that your sprinklers are aimed at the grass only- not on the driveway or gutters.

WHY WORLD WATER DAY MATTERS

As the world population increases, so will our need for water. It is said that most of the water use in the world is for agriculture as opposed to domestic use, so as our need for food increases, the need for water will grow exponentially. We have to explore ways to conserve and recycle the supply that we have.

Water scarcity and poor sanitation create a breeding ground for waterborne illnesses; statistics show that half of the world’s hospital beds are filled with people suffering from a water-related illness, many of which end up being lethal. The issue is that many of these diseases are preventable if a suitable water supply is provided. The time to act is now.

We’re your one stop shop for all of your plumbing needs in Mississauga and Oakville, ON. Call Gold Medal Plumbing and Drain at (416) 800-6264.
